The Legendary Bollywood Music Composer Khayyam Saab’ Passed Away

Well, it has been a sad and very tragic news for music lovers and Bollywood, as legendary music composer Khayyam Saab’ passed away. The music composer Mohammed Zahur ‘Khayyam’ Hashmi is no more and took his last breath in the hospital. The 92 year old music genius is among the very best composer of film industry. He was admitted there since a most recent couple of days for age-related sickness. In his last days, music director/composer was suffering from various ailments. On July 28, 2019, Khayyam was hospitalized because of lung disease.

Khayyam, who started his career at the young age of 17, started his Bollywood journey as Sharmaji of the famed composer duo Sharmaji-Varmaji, which composed for Heer Ranjha (1948). His first solo project was the 1953 hit Foot Path, starring Dilip Kumar and Meena Kumari in the lead roles. Khayyam is remembered for his unforgettable melodies in films like Umrao Jaan, Kabhi Kabhie, Razia Sultan, Shola Aur Shabnam, Trishul and Dard.

Soon after his death news came, the Bollywood actors, singers and other have shown their grief and condolence foe the music genius.  At the time of death the famous ghazal singer Talat Aziz was there and he confirmed the news to media.

Celebrities like Karan Johar, Gulzar, Rishi Kapoor, Javed Akhtar Amitabh Bachchan, Ayushmann Khurrana, Lata Mangeshkar, Saleem Merchant have taken to Twitter to condole his demise.

Big B wrote on Twitter, “A legend in music .. a soft-spoken amiable soul .. one that contributed to several films and some of the more important ones of mine .. passes away .. KHAYAM sahib .. for all the memorable music he conducted and produced .. prayers condolences.”

His Work

The music maestro was awarded with the third-highest civilian honour, Padma Bhushan, in 2011 for his contribution to music and cinema. He was also bestowed with the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in Creative Music by Sangeet Natak Akademi.

Besides that He was honoured with the National Film Award for his work in Umrao Jaa. Apart from film music that had the touch of ghazal but was rooted in Indian classical music, Khayyam saab’s non-film songs are equally loved by his fans.

Some of his most popular songs include, “Dikhayii Diye Yun” from Bazaar, “Aaja Re” from Noorie, “Tere Chehre Se” from Kabhi Kabhi, and “In Aankhon Ki” from Umrao Jaan among many others. He first gained fame for composing music for the 1961 film Shola Aur Shabnam.
